How fees work

Plain answers before you book. Call the front desk if yours is not here.

  • Insurance we work with

We are in network with many PPO plans that include an acupuncture benefit, and with some EPO and point-of-service plans. Plans differ, and they change each year, so we check yours before you come in.

    • Many PPO plans with an acupuncture benefit

    • Some EPO and point-of-service plans

    • Medicare: chronic low back pain only

    • Medicaid benefits for acupuncture vary by state, so ask us before you book

  • If you pay yourself

If you are not using insurance, you pay at the visit by card. Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for acupuncture; ask your plan administrator before you book.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

If we are out of network with your plan, your plan may pay you back for some of what you pay, and we give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, after each visit to send it. The plan decides.

    • Is there an acupuncture benefit?

    • How many visits does it cover?

    • Is there a copay or a deductible?

    • Do I need a referral?

  • An estimate in advance

We give a written estimate in advance to anyone paying without insurance. Ask for it when you book, and we send it before your first visit.

  • Checking your benefits

Before your first visit, our front desk calls your plan, asks the four questions above and tells you what it said. If something changes, we call you.

  • What the first visit includes

About 75 minutes: a talk about your health and your medicines, a look at your tongue and pulse, a treatment, and a plan for the next few visits. Your acupuncturist explains the risks and answers your questions before any needle goes in. The fee for the first visit is on your estimate or in your benefits check.

  • Medicare covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, with set limits and under a qualified provider's supervision. Ask us what applies to you.

Four questions for your plan

Before you book, ask your plan

If we are out of network with your plan, these tell you what a receipt from us could earn back.

  • 01

    Is there an acupuncture benefit?

Some plans cover it, some cover it with a referral, and some do not cover it.

  • 02

How many visits does it cover?

Many plans set a limit for the year or for each condition.

  • 03

Is there a copay or a deductible?

Ask what you pay at each visit, and how much of your deductible is left.

  • 04

    Do I need a referral?

Some plans want a letter from your doctor first.
