Ear seeds
Ear seeds are tiny seeds, or small beads, held on the ear with a patch of tape. You press them gently a few times a day between visits. There are no needles.
Who usually comes in
People who want something to do between visits, and people who would rather not have needles, often choose ear seeds. They are easy to take off if you do not like them.
What a visit is like, in order
The ear can feel warm or a little tender where a seed sits. Take a seed off if the skin is sore or itchy.
- 01
Step 1: We talk
Your acupuncturist asks about your ears, your skin and any tape allergies.
- 02
Step 2: The ear is cleaned
We wipe the outer ear with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
- 03
Step 3: The seeds go on
Seeds on small patches are placed on a few spots, one ear or both.
- 04
Step 4: Your plan for home
We show you how to press each seed and how long to leave them. Most people take them off after a few days.
Tell us first
Say any of these when you book, and again at the visit.
Tape or adhesive allergy
If tape irritates your skin, we use a different patch or skip seeds.
Broken or infected skin
We do not place seeds on an ear that is cut, red or sore.
Pregnancy
If you are or might be pregnant, some ear points are avoided.
Water and sleep
Tell us if you swim or sleep on one side, and we choose where to place them.
Children
If a child will wear them, a parent stays in the room and watches the skin each day.
How many visits, and what this does not do
Ear seeds are usually put on at a visit and replaced at the next. Your acupuncturist decides with you how long to use them, and you can take them off whenever you like.
What it does not do
Ear seeds do not replace your doctor's care or your medicines. We do not promise a result.
When to see a doctor instead
See your doctor or an urgent care clinic first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a sudden severe headache, or a fever with a stiff neck. In an emergency, call 911.
